There is egg predation, chick loss and sometimes possibly just some “bad parenting”! One pair of Pied Oystercatchers laid eggs the first year and did not appear to realise they were supposed to sit on them, but they have since learnt it is an essential part of rearing a chick and they have done so since.

Using the ubiquitous Great Egret as a reference, the Goliath Heron is half a meter taller (from bill-tip to toe) and four times as heavy. The clutch of a Goliath Heron would usually consist of 3-4 pale blue eggs that would hatch after about 4 weeks. For this reason it needs huge wings, outspanning the Great Egret by a meter.

My particular favorite terns were the Sandwich Terns, a bird I rarely see in any numbers and just generally good looking with that natty yellow-tipped bill. The birds are so busy, finding sticks, flying with sticks, fixing nests, tending to eggs in nests, preening feathers, touching bills, feeding chicks, refusing to feed chicks.

Speaking of pregnant snakes, do sea snakes lay their eggs ashore like sea turtles or do they keep them internally until the young are ready to hatch/ be born, like some sharks? I used to play Subbuteo as a kid … a kind of tip-kick football game that was named after this species (apparently, the inventors first wanted to name the game “Hobby” but that was rejected as too generic, or so the story goes). The Eurasian Hobby was another notable raptor of the month.

At the start of this new trail we accidentally flushed a White-tailed Nightjar that was sitting on a lone pink egg. The plan I had hatched some days before was to arrive at the northeast tip of Tobago by mid afternoon, board a boat and head out to some of the rocky islands where several species of seabirds were breeding.

In the water I find a single black-tipped feather as their only trace.
