One bird species that we occasionally observe around Broome is the Yellow-billed Spoonbill, but we had not seen one for a few years until recently. We soon observed several bird species and then a Yellow-billed Spoonbill flew overhead. Not only is it a bird species we rarely encounter, but we had never found a breeding colony before.

One of my favorite bird species living by my house is the Juniper Titmouse. The Aldea Birding Group that spearheaded this project placed 70 nest boxes in our open spaces and pulled in volunteers to monitor them during the bird’s mating season. But a Bewick’s Wren did build a nest, which it promptly abandoned before laying any eggs.

This has obviously involved the active targeting of Moruga Grasshopper eggs and young, and an all-out attack involving chemical warfare. The whole reason I was exploring this area can be traced to a report of multiple sightings of small groups of the migratory Yellow-billed Cuckoo. After all this, the Moruga Grasshopper remains a pest.

If I had known that these Amanita caesareas smell pleasantly of eggs, I would have taken a sniff. And while this poisonous species is usually red and spotted, older examples can lose their spots and take on an orange hue. Early in the Wet Season we had noticed the arrival of unusually high numbers of Magpie Geese and they are a species that don’t always make it to the Broome area if it is not a wet year. There were several family groups that included three adult birds, so we presume that these were male Magpie Geese that had two partners.

Due to the large numbers of grasshoppers we have been encountering larger numbers of Australian Bustards and on dull days they can be found in small groups rather than singularly.
