Flock to Marion

10,000 Birds

Hannah Buschert was first exposed to birds and birding during a required ornithology course at Oregon State University and she quickly caught the birding bug. This spurred her to pursue a career in environmental education and wildlife nature tourism as a park ranger in Texas and as the Great Florida Birding and Wildlife Trail Coordinator with Florida Fish and Wildlife.

The Antics of Pewees in Costa Rica

10,000 Birds

Bird names say much about human perception, they can also give us insight into the people who invented names for official bird descriptions. Warblers might not always warble but whether by constant use of the word or because it really is a good English term for members of the Parulidae, “warbler” seems to fit. Sunbittern also works because what else could that bizarre and ancient bird be called?

Spectacled Petrel Surprise- New Species for Costa Rica!

10,000 Birds

Despite what some outdated sources claim, the list of bird species reported for Costa Rica is much more than 860. Since the 1990s, thanks to higher numbers of observers, increased pelagic coverage, and some species expanding their ranges from the north and the south, the official bird list for Costa Rica has climbed to a robust 920 plus species. Southern Lapwing is a “new” addition that has become quite common.

Birding Jianfengling, Hainan (A-H)

10,000 Birds

Jianfengling National Forest Park is a park in the West of Hainan – the tourist websites claim that it is “the largest and best-preserved tropical original forest in China”, which – if true – is a rather sad statement given the wide inroads that commercial agriculture has made into the park. Still, it has quite a good habitat and birds – so good, in fact, that the frugal blog post writer (me) decided to write two separate posts about this park.

Willie Wagtails in Broome

10,000 Birds

The Willie Wagtail – Rhipidura leucophrys is one of Australia’s most widespread bird species, but it is not observed all year round close to our home in Broome. Willie Wagtails are present across much of the mainland and they are a large fantail. They are distinct with their black and white plumage and they are extremely vocal. They are often heard chattering away before they are seen and they flit around chasing insects, which can make photography interesting.

10,000 Birds

I believe that writing is easy. Everyone can do it. So easy that I am writing, too, in my second language that I learned only in my 20s. Then, why am I so surprised when I encounter a good writer?? R. Bruce Richardson is a good writer. His words touched something in me at page 1, and by the end of the book, he still had my undivided attention. Now, that’s a rarity.

Birding: Special Lockdown Edition

10,000 Birds

In the great tradition of authors reporting on and from global hotspots (think Hemingway or Orwell during the Spanish Civil War), this post is written on day 9 of being locked down in my Shanghai apartment compound. After the first 7 days dominated by daily compound-wide Covid tests and being locked down inside the compound, I went outside on the compound grounds on days 8 and 9.

How much time do you devote to birding?

10,000 Birds

How high is birding on your list of activities – is it the very first or merely one of? Are you happy with an occasional morning here and there or do you need more? And how much more? These are the types I recognise: Coffee Break Birding – 10-15 minutes, usually not planned ahead but squeezed out of your schedule. E.g. you have a meeting next to a park or a lake, so you come a bit earlier to see whatever may be there.

On the Lake with American White Pelicans

10,000 Birds

I’ve made some new friends in 2022. For the past few years, they’ve been mere acquaintances, passing through North Florida on their way to who knows where. I’d spot them from the distance along the coast or swirling high overhead, their bright plumage glinting in the sunshine. But now, they’ve decided to become full-time winter residents, resting along the shoreline, fishing in the shallows, swimming past me day in and day out.

Black-faced Cuckoo-shrikes

10,000 Birds

Black-faced Cuckoo-shrikes – Coracina novaehollandiae are a common bird species around our home in Broome, Western Australia. They are present throughout much of Australia and as their name would suggest they have a black face! They have one very distinct feature when they land, which is that they shuffle their wings. It appears as if they just need to lie their wings correctly to be comfortable and it is never quite right when they first land.

Birding Shanghai in February 2022

Unfortunately, Nanhui – in the past, a great place for birdwatching in Shanghai – is continuing its decline. Last time I was there, it reminded me of a Franz Kafka story that I vaguely recalled and then looked up. In the English translation, the story is titled “Little Fable”: “Alas,” said the mouse, “the whole world is growing smaller every day.

Review Classic: The Warbler Guide

10,000 Birds

With spring migration near (though for some nearer than others, looking at you birders in the south), I thought it was a good time to look back at one of my favorite identification guides. The taxonomy may have changed a bit since the guide was published in 2013, but the warblers are still the same, giving us extreme joy while driving us crazy as we try to identify them high in the canopy or zipping amongst lower branches.

The Long and Bumpy Road

10,000 Birds

Necessity being the mother of invention, and all that, the almost-total disappearance of Mexico’s second-largest lake in the spring of 2021 forced me to try a new birding route last May. I had heard that there was still a bit of water at the lake’s eastern end, near the towns of Araró, Iramuco and Andocutín. Thinking that might mean a serious concentration of waterfowl and shorebirds there, I made the 50 mile (75 km) drive to those towns.

Well, summer is over! However, that does not mean that our wet season is over! We can expect more rain over coming weeks and the past week has seen more rain fall around the regions. Tropical Cyclone Anika became a rain bearing depression over the past week. It came into our region dumping enough rain to close the highway south across Roebuck Plains for a while and also restrict travel north to high clearance vehicles.

Apart from the birds, to which I will get in a moment, the most interesting aspect of this place for a cynic like me is that it has not one but two Playboy brand stores as well as two different fake Playboy stores, one with the marginally sensible name R

It had been two weeks since we had driven across the plains and the water level was higher.

Nevertheless, five years seems a good time to reflect on the blogging experience.
