Although paramos can’t boast of having a high species count, nevertheless they easily compensate for that with very singular and most interesting species. A Black-chested Buzzard Eagle ( Geranoaetus melanoleucus ) circled above us and a number of Brown-bellied Swallows ( Notiochelidon murina) were seen. Ah, what the heck!

Checking my annual list, I am where I usually am at this time of year: several species short of 200. Still, this way or another, the year is ending with some glorious species, e.g. a rare Greater Spotted Eagle. But through binoculars I noticed small raised crests and supercilia joining on hindneck – Woodlarks !

The waterfowl flock was made up of two very unique looking species: the Fulvous and Black-belled Whistling Ducks. My husband and I zipped up windbreakers and pulled down hats to stay warm as we traversed the raised path, watching Common Gallinules, White-Faced Ibis, and American Coots probe for food along the exposed mud.

At the far end of the lake stands a tall, dry tree with an eagle that we are struggling to determine and it remains a dark silhouette far too far. Somewhere below that mysterious eagle, at the far shore of the lake, lies one Bengal Tiger … and further to the right – two more! The closer one raises her head, than lies back.

Back on the first weekend in May, I attended the Heron Festival at Clear Lake, one of the four aforementioned lakes which also include Eagle Lake, Lake Almanor and the Thermalito Afterbay of Lake Oroville. Like the breeding activity of many species this spring, the grebes were late, probably due to the unseasonable weather.

When the land is flooded after rain it will move inland and breed at the ephemeral lakes and raise its young there. It is a very easy species to find in the Broome area and present throughout the year. The closest similar species is the Banded Stilt , but it is a stockier bird with shorter legs.

They belong to the same species like those found back in Europe, Sus scrofa – which inhabits a belt stretching from northern Africa and Europe all the way to Indonesia, but a different subspecies, S.s. The adults of most species will still care for the chicks no matter how much you touch them. If you cannot find the nest or it’s too destroyed, do not try and raise a chick this young. It’s illegal to raise wild birds (even orphaned ones) without state and federal permits. Do not worry about touching the baby birds.

This species are long living and so the population appears to be sustainable at this stage despite the predation. We have never had a pair succeed in raising all of their chicks and even to succeed in raising one takes a lot of effort because they are so dependent on their parents. We just had to stop on the way, even if briefly, at Cinchona, Cinchona- always an easy place for in your face views of hummingbirds and species that visit the fruit feeders. “We let a one-eyed Bald Eagle go after a year of battling state officials in Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Indiana and Kentucky. Two years ago we got a call about an eagle hit by a car. It is my best bird because it is just such an incredible species, and looking at it made me realize that I had temporarily stopped to fully appreciate birds during the stressful last few years.
