After the Common Starling , my second bird of the morning becomes the largest eagle of Europe, the White-tailed Eagle , this one with a fairly white tail, yet still dark beak, that I estimate to be in its 3rd calendar year. Looking miserable with its feathers soaked, one yellow and blue European Bee-eater sits on a dead branch.

There is a breeding pair of White-tailed Eagles at the Veliko Ratno Island and they can be seen year-round, but the best chances are in winter, when they hunt ducks around the island. Pygmy Cormorants are regular, occasionally a White-tailed Eagle and during cold spells, Goosanders. eBird list.

Hongbenghe is a very small village in Yunnan, right next to the border with Myanmar. The Crested Serpent Eagle is another species bound to suffer from a naming error in perpetuity. One road simply ends here, giving the place a real end-of-the-world feeling. The White-cheeked Partridge is classified as Near Threatened.

For a much larger Eurasian Eagle Owl, it compresses to look like a branch, even aiming it’s more bark like wing feathers towards the predator and closes its eyes, to complete the disguise, small owls will do that with us too. Many are familiar with dissecting owl pellets, but several birds will caste a pellet including hawks, eagles, gulls, herons and heck, I once witnessed a Scissor-tailed Flycatcher hack up a small one. For example, since eagles and hawks tend to rip their prey apart and have stronger digestive acids, their pellets look like wads of fur.

Wedge-tailed Eagles roam the skies, along with Brown Falcon, Black Kites , and Nankeen Kestrels. When we were at an amazing rock formation, called the Olgas, or Kata-Tjutas as the locals call them, this Nankeen Kestrel hunted all around me for well over 30 minutes before drifting away in search of better hunting grounds.

Must be a joke, right? However, if we accept that some old reports were this species and not the very similar and easily confused Bat Falcon , it’s pretty likely that a few Orange-breasteds did hunt for Band-tailed Pigeons , parakeets, parrots, and other birds over the canopy of rainforests at the base of the Costa Rican mountains.

Not only were they a common bird, they were a common bird nearshore; indigenous peoples hunted them up and down the coast. Raptors and other predatory birds have largely rebounded, and there seems to be be no shortage of Brown Pelicans, Peregrine Falcons and Bald Eagles. That would have been awful. What a horror! What a disaster!

There was a lot of disturbance, with almost everything taking flight, as a pair of White-bellied Sea Eagles soared over the lagoon on dusk. The birding at Eilat is so dynamic in so many ways, you can’t just use that easy “gen” to zip over and see a Bar-tailed Lark , that Greater Spotted Eagle that flew overhead, or even the Wryneck hanging out in Eilat’s very own Central Park. Lesser Spotted Eagle was also seen several times along with Steppe Eagle.
