At one time I counted over 60 individuals from each goose species from a single spot. I am still waiting to be surprised by a rarer species, such as Greater Scaup (which have been seen by others). I have also heard Tawny Owl and Eurasian Eagle Owl at night. In terms of passerines, I the park can also be quite interesting.

Some 320 species have been recorded here, and in springtime it is possible to observe more than 150 bird species in a week. One of the reasons that I usually start each year’s species list with a visit to the wetlands of Lake Cuitzeo is that the site offers so many species that I can find nowhere else. Not all the colorful species have feathers. There are several, almost identical, species of Flycatchers in the Myiarchus genus.

Raptors to look for in this reserve are Golden Eagle and Short-toed Snake Eagle , European Honey-buzzard and Peregrine Falcon. The commonest owls are Eurasian Scops Owl and Tawny Owl , while rare ones include Ural Owl and Eurasian Eagle Owl. About 120 species have been recorded so far.

Both bird species fish in the same locations around Broome, though. This sandstone cliff was only a few hundred metres from where we encountered the juvenile Wedge-tailed Eagle too. One more bird species with serious talons in the north of Australia!

My British total was a mere 172 species – not bad, but not very good. Every one of my 171 species was a bird that I found myself. It keeps a monthly record of sightings, so I can tell you that it was in February that I recorded my highest monthly species total (106), while my lowest total was in August (39).

On a recent visit I threw my bags in the hotel room and went straight there, and got over 60 species of birds in a few hours and fantastic views of Nilgai , the largest antelope in India. Commoner species include Bar-headed Geese , parakeets, shrikes, mynas and minivets. You should also see Gharial and Mugger Crocodiles there.

This spot has achieved quite a bit of fame as part of the staging area for hawks, eagles and vultures planning to soar south across the Straits of Gibraltar every September. Short-toed Snake-Eagles were consistently the most abundant, with Booted Eagles taking second place. Booted Eagle. And so did the soaring birds.

On the opposite side is a smallish falcon, obviously too short-tailed for a Common Kestrel, a Eurasian Hobby first comes to mind… but a male Red-footed Falcon on migration it turns out to be. Wait, those fingers, the upper one is not a buzzard… a small eagle, it’s a dark morph Booted Eagle !

There was a large raft of hundreds of American Coot , an American White Pelican and lots of duck species. A Merlin had just attempted to grab breakfast before our very eyes… She missed and while we were happy for the sandpipers – they are very pretty – the excitement we felt was for the falcon. The birds warmed us too.

In Costa Rica, despite there seeming to be less enthusiasm than previous GBDs, enough local and visiting birders dedicated most of the day to binocular use to give us a fantastic total of 731 species !

Birdwise, it turned out to be a good one and my year list was almost 400 species long, which made me happy… almost. Lesser White-fronted Goose and Greater Spotted Eagle came to mind, but what else? I am scoping Great Cormorants roosting in their colony in the (now dry) flooded forest, there is one… eagle to the right of them.

In an unhurried half-day of birding, we racked up over 90 species, including killers like Denham’s Bustard , Northern Carmine-throated Bee-eater , and Shelley’s Rufous Sparrow. The raptors exceeded expectations in both quantity and quality, with lots of vultures, eagles, and a magnificent Beaudouin’s Snake-Eagle.

At a recent Queens County Bird Club meeting, hawk expert Josh Haas illustrated his presentation on migrating hawk identification with videos of hawk species on a split screen, so we could see the differences between, let’s say, a flying Red-tailed Hawk and a flying Broad-winged Hawk. And video resources. I am a big silhouette fan.

Based on the number of species recorded, it looks like we also had pretty good coverage. 744 Species. We recorded a very good percentage of bird species that were possible including typically tough ones like quail-doves, Sharpbill, Black-crowned Antpitta , and the cotingas. Species Missed. Migrant species are around, rarities are waiting to be found (such as, believe it or not, Lincoln’s Sparrow ), and, most of all, we have Christmas Counts to attend to. Black Hawk Eagle from Cangreja. I chalked up 132 species in a pretty relaxed eight days, during which birds shared the agenda with culture. With 154 eBirded species almost single-handedly spotted by the UK expat Geoff Laight, the Paljuvi is the latest addition to the top-5 list. With 154 eBirded species, the Beljarica shares the 4th place on the list.
