Not without reason, this was taken as an insult by the third president of the United States, Thomas Jefferson. While driving along the Trekvaart canal I spotted hundreds of Tufted Duck with a nice sprinkling of Smew , Common Pochard and Common Goldeneye. They didn’t seem to mind the danger, and as they slowly slid towards the dam’s waterfall they easily ducked under the water and emerged a dozen or so feet away, safe once more. At New Croton, the water spills directly over the side of the giant stone structure, and yet the cormorants swam less than a few feet from the precipice!
