What I am getting at here is that I have seen lots and lots of Ruddy Ducks at Jamaica Bay but never one that looked like this particular individual. As it turned out, the remaining water was too shallow for ducks, except a few Northern Shovelers. Admittedly, early May is too late to find most duck species in Michoacán, even in a good year.) In fact, I can see many more of these ducks, much closer to home. It was only a bit better for shorebirds and egrets.

A few paddle strokes down the river and on the right bank there were four Impala antelopes ( Aepyceros melampus ). albiventris ) and fish eating Pied Kingfishers ( Ceryle rudis ). According to these researchers, only the exceptionally intelligent herons acquire the skill of bait fishing. Then the bread-easy-catch connection was made.

Apparently, there are no Lesser Scaup around here, so even I can be fairly confident to get this species identification right. According to the HBW, they mainly eat fish. They have a lot of spare time as their fishing technique is very efficient. Can’t say I heard this though. An Eastern Buzzard had goose for lunch.

Water quality was good that day, and we could perfectly see the waving eelgrass, the freshwater fish species, the adorable turtles. New Zealand had a widespread dabbling duck, the Grey Duck ( Pacific Black Duck if you’re an Aussie) but these were declining a in number because of changes to their habitat.

When I reached the levee earlier that morning, I met an elderly hunter from whom I learned that there was an ongoing duck and pheasant hunt, but no one was shooting from, nor towards the embankment, hence I should be safe there. Piney Z lake is not large, bisected by a berm that parallels the land-trail as well as a series of fishing earthen fingers that stretch out into the water at regular intervals. Nosing our kayaks between the trunks of bald cypress trees, we watched two Osprey eating fish on their large, stick-filled nest.

The shallows are full of ducks in eclipse, a real puzzle that requires a bit of time and a sharp eye – something you usually reserve for warblers and such. Wigeons are only migrants and not a breeding species in Serbia and August is a bit too early for any longer distance duck movements. The autumn migration has clearly started.

The shallows at its lower end are full of Tufted Ducks (500) and Common Pochards (350), Great Cormorants (50), all of them dissolving in the mist hanging low over water and hiding further rafts. A few dozen Common Goldeneyes and several Smews are among them but it takes a scope to locate these diminutive ducks.

Well, it took about ten minutes to find out, as I was sitting in the RV, right at water’s edge, photographing a lovely pair of Rufus-banded Honeyeaters , when a small, 2-meter-long Crocodile came rushing up out of the water, right at my door! These Plumed Whistling Ducks were wary of our approach, but not enough to really move.

We presume they lose their feet to fish, as the red lure must be quite enticing! They love to hang out in town around the Fish and Chip shops for some reason! The gull on the right has nice red legs and bill and is a full adult bird. This covers all species in both the duck and gull family in most households!

It takes six months from where the seasonal floods enter the north of the Delta to where they reach these rivers, which then flow into the Kalahari and evaporate. Those waters never see the sea!

Even in the Brazilian Amazon, I’ve never seen this many whistling ducks together–there were sixty at a manmade lake behind the Brevard Community College near Titusville, Florida. Black-bellied Whistling Ducks. Get a load of the mandible on the granddaddy skimmer to the far right.

Driving north along the Ionian seacoast through the city of Igoumenitsa, there is a place where the main artery takes you right, further away from the sea – follow it for 150 metres (500 ft) and then turn left just before a small stadium. Highlight species: Ferruginous Duck , Goosander , Red-breasted Merganser , Red-crested Pochard , Greater Scaup , Velvet Scoter , Black-throated Diver. In late February and March, the only duck species that does not overwinter here is heading back – the Garganey. Ducks mostly migrate in November, reaching their peak by mid-December.

Not impeded by branches or the need to bushwhack, we could paddle right up close to the sound, in this case the merry singing of a White-throated Sparrow.
