When I reached the levee earlier that morning, I met an elderly hunter from whom I learned that there was an ongoing duck and pheasant hunt, but no one was shooting from, nor towards the embankment, hence I should be safe there. Fish will lose their spawning ground, otters and White-tailed Eagles will be no more.

I think it’s time to hunt Sandhill Cranes. We’ve always hunted Bald Eagles. There was a lot of hunting for Bald Eagles—it is traditionally a game species.

In late February and March, the only duck species that does not overwinter here is heading back – the Garganey. Ducks mostly migrate in November, reaching their peak by mid-December.

Chickens come in at around 24, pigeons have around 40-50 and some duck species may have a whopping 400. New studies are beginning to show that smell may be an important part in these birds finding the right nest and/or partner under cover of darkness. Ducks are the avian leaders of bill touch.

A curious Laysan Duck takes a stroll at Midway Atoll. Although Laysan Duck is a Hawaiian bird, most birders have never heard of it. That would have been awful.

This ABA Code 4 bird was found hanging out with some Wood Ducks in Missoula, conveniently enough, by Radd Icenoggle. My fiance and I drove nearly two hours to the Jasper-Pulaski Fish and Wildlife Area in rural Indiana to watch them come in for the evening. Tragic, right? He promises to do better next year!

Luckily, I have just the mega tour I need, right here in the islands I call home. Also on the ground you’ll see your first Finsch’s Duck. This fish hunting duck ranges from the northern tip of New Zealand to the sub-Antarctic Auckland Islands (after which it was first named) but is common nowhere.
