This past January, however, my experience was even better. And when two of those eyes are professionally trained for wildlife monitoring, that is certainly a big plus. For example, of the 9 duck species we saw, 7 are winter-only. Most years, a day in January of serious birding around Lake Cuitzeo can give me around 85 species.

Corey’s Best Bird of the Weekend was a cooperative Blue-gray Gnatcatcher at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge that contentedly foraged while Corey digiscoped. That’s a win in my book. Ducks and herons include Garganey and Ferruginous Duck , Squacco and Purple Herons , as well as the Eurasian Spoonbill. I haven’t even been to all of the best national wildlife refuges for birding. Given my west coast experience, I have made dedicated birding trips to several of the more predictable birding hotspots.
