This past January, however, my experience was even better. And when two of those eyes are professionally trained for wildlife monitoring, that is certainly a big plus. For example, of the 9 duck species we saw, 7 are winter-only. Most years, a day in January of serious birding around Lake Cuitzeo can give me around 85 species.

Several Ferruginous Duck and one surprising male Goosander , four Glossy Ibises , Common Kingfishers , Eurasian Hopooes , a high note of a Penduline Tit somewhere from the willows along the canal, Eurasian Spoonbills , European Turtle Doves gently purrring …. Out of some 4000 buffaloes still being kept in Greece, about 3000 are at this lake.

July in New York City is generally an unpleasant experience. I was sweltering my way up the east side of the East Pond at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge, enjoying the low water levels possible because the work of lots of volunteers to get the drainage pipe dug out, and not seeing much of interest. I strongly suspect that the rate of attrition on this Loon family is inversely proportionate to the abundance of ducklings in the bay. Ducks are easier prey for the Eagle. Non-bird watchers without binoculars and experience are notoriously bad sources of information. And, every now and then one of the Loons disappears too.

Felonious Jive really likes a ravishing returning rarity – a Falcated Duck. This bird spent the 2011-2012 winter at Colusa National Wildlife Refuge in northern California, migrated someplace exotic and distant in February, and returned to the same pond at the beginning of this month.
