The month and this particular period is all the more auspicious for me and mine, as so many friends and families celebrate spring birthdays. My family took our annual post-Easter Egg hunt hike at Powder Mills Park, where I spied several gorgeous matched pairs of Wood Ducks along with lots of different woodpecker species.

As usual, my experience with such boardwalks was somewhat underwhelming, as was Eshowe as a whole, but there were still a few birds worth mentioning at the forest and in the area surrounding Eshowe. These two Hadada Ibis are reenacting the mirror scene from “Duck soup” (sort of). The name is dutch-german for hammerhead.

At the end of October, my family flew to Florida for a multi-day road trip aimed at the beautiful springs. An Anhinga busily sought prey, periodically ducking down into the grasses and completely disappearing from view. We had an ambitious itinerary planned: six springs within eight Florida State Parks.

At these places they are neither shy nor reed-dependent but can often be seen grazing on lawns like cows or swimming on open ponds no less visible than a rubber duck in a bath tub. The following pictures were taken at Hannover Zoo recently, showing just that – feeding and preening, for a family-friendly birding experience.

While I don’t have a lot of experience with tropical terns, I believe that narrows it down to Sandwich Tern ( Thalasseus sandvicensis ), a bird that – while still quite rare in the Northeast – seems to be occurring with greater frequency , along with an increasingly northward incursion of Royal Terns ( Thalasseus maximus ).

However, the great birding experience that is Sani starts lower down. A family of endangered Wattled Cranes might be a highlight of the lower sections of the Sani Pass road, by Adam Riley. Buff-streaked Chats and Cape Rock-Thrushes sing from boulder tops, and family huddles of Ground Woodpeckers emit their rather gull-like shrieks.

Stretching over the water, big boughs dangled their flowers below, so a passerby literally had to duck their heads to avoid the bloom. Across the bridge, my eyes wandered from the white marble columns of the Memorial to a pair of ducks twenty or thirty feet from the edge of the path. Weather is weird. Mallard in a lovely place.

Astounding because she picked up birding before she could speak and surprising because this ability was definitely not inherited from anyone in my family, myself included. Very few kids just take to birding like ducks to water (terrible pun I know!). Her natural talent was astounding and surprising. So you have to break them in gently.

The flat expanse stretched far out into the distance, but close to us a few Least Terns chased each other, one lone Forster’s Tern glided by, and a handful of American Black Ducks swam about in the shallows. The Little Egret walks in front of her, a dozen Lesser Whistling Ducks flies noisily low above water and through a flooded grass wades one Black-winged Stilt. It has become more common in the UK over recent years, but in my experience are usually seen at quite a distance. It had learned that people feed bread to the ducks and small fish gather beneath the ducks to mop up any crumbs that are missed. Thus it was very approachable.
