Eastern Meadowlarks, cowbirds, grackles , and a few other birds are at peace with the cows but for most birds on Poas, the forest is where life is living large. At least most of the resident species can still be seen right along the road, you just have to keep an eye out for cyclists and vehicles on their way up and down the volcano.

First, 800 km of driving from Belgrade through Bulgaria to very NE corner of Greece and the Dadia Forest National Park with its 36 species of diurnal raptors, out of Europe’s 38. From there to the nearby Evros River Delta, at the very border with Turkey, with more easterly species such as the Spur-winged Plover.

The cows and their entourage of Cattle Egrets sloshed through the pastures, each time they moved we lurched forward hoping to see a disturbed Grey-breasted Crake hop into view – but alas, no such luck even though we were hearing the little skulkers consistently. Farmers keep their livestock in this wetland also. Great Blue Heron.

This species was discovered (shot, actually) in the 19th century, only to be lost through the entire 20th century. The Forest Owlet is an endemic species of this mountain range. From the next curve in the road, I can see the cows grazing deep in the valley: “If I was a tiger, I would check my prey from here.” Let’s go.”.

Their nest, which is one way of differentiating these species, is started with bark flakes and lumps of earth laid on the floor of the cavity; with a cup of finer bark shreds, grasses and rootlets, but mainly lined with fur, wool, hair, and feathers. One of the creatures that didn’t so much cross my path as follow it was a Cattle Egret that seemed to think my car was a suitable substitute for cows. They were also finding tree frogs though I am not sure of the exact species. Whatever the species is, these tree frogs didn’t have a chance.

The grass is green, the wildflowers are spectacular and now we have numerous species of dragonfly to enjoy as the season starts to change. In early August this year, I saw 77 species here (69 on the lake, plus 8 more in the surrounding areas) but barely more than a thousand individuals. I pass the first of several dead cows. Two more dead cows later, I reached the southernmost corner of the lake with its mudbars, reedbeds and a few artificial rocky islets.

However, there are a few stand out sites here and there that are significantly better for species like Jabiru, Lance-tailed Manakin, and Nicaraguan Grackle to name a few. But, you won’t find any dairy cows at Medio Queso. BUT, we did see lots of other nice birds, most of them bonus species tough to see elsewhere in Costa Rica.

They know that eagles are like hawks but bigger, and then they see hawks in a situation that is not ‘soaring against an open sky’ and they are like Holy cow, that is big, must be an eagle.

This property is located in northern Butte County which is nearing the (dwindling) northern most historic range for this species in California. Since cows can destroy nest site entrances, eight inch square concrete blocks were used as foyers at the tunnel entrances.

As a result, I had 15 species in the first hour. Laight has recorded some 100 species here, including Slavonian (Horned) Grebe and Red-rumped Swallow (the first is a rare migrant/wintering species only, while the second one is an uncommon breeder). Other herons, egrets, gulls and terns are a surprise at this time of the year.

On a trip to Suriname to find and film some of these spectacular species I was blown away by the birding. Suriname has approximately 735 recorded species, with many more to still be added to its total list. I’m only supposed to document one specific species, but I also note the other birds because in a 4 hour period, I’m lucky if I see the target species for 15 minutes. Cattle wandered this pasture along with me (one cow even attempted to taste my carbon fiber tripod). The first week it was a Sedge Wren.

The problem with that statement is it's not as if farmers are searching "the wild" for cows, pigs, chicken and fish, plucking them from their homes, and plopping them on a farm to live out their (shortened) lives prior to slaughter. I do not pass judgment on other species, whose motives I cannot comprehend. Besides, we have choices.
