This is how it looks like: Or at sunset: A species I did not come for from Shanghai is the Black-crowned Night Heron. They look crap but presumably offer some protection for the chicks, though not from each other (see the murderous activities within the nests in my previous post ). Yes, we have them in Shanghai as well.

Fortunately, other spots in the same area offer similar birds, which of course I would not have known without our guides. Similarly, the Alpine Leaf Warbler is one of the more attractive species in an otherwise almost indistinguishable family of identical leaf warblers. (“But the difference in wing bars, Kai!”).

Go to Hispaniola and a birder has the pleasure of admiring two species of tody for the price of one, checking out the odd, mono familiar Palmchat , and listening to the parrotish calls of the White-necked Crow. Watch the streams for fish, we saw a few, unidentified yet cool looking tropical species! Of course we all want that!

Little Ringed Plovers are fiercely protective of their cute chicks. Of course, being mean, I only show you one of them. A cuckoo species with a sense of honor, being a non-parasitic cuckoo. Black-crowned Night Heron. Little Egrets are busy bickering inside their nest. A Tiger Shrike – as always – looks very stylish.

This is a bit of a dilemma for local authorities – on the one hand, they would presumably like to protect the birds, on the other hand, they also want to draw as many tourists to the place as possible. As this is a coastal place, there are of course lots of waders, in larger numbers, and more variety than in Shanghai.

This species has also eliminated the need for childcare – the chicks emerge from this pile on their own and never even get to see their parents. The Light-vented Bulbul is one of the three or four most common bird species in Shanghai. So, recently I changed my own ringtone accordingly (you can listen to it on xenocanto of course).

A Barred Cuckoo-Dove showed somewhat atypical behavior or had not read its eBird entry about it being “seldom seen out in the open … quick to flee when approached” Of course, Hongbenghe, Yunnan is quite far away from Chicago. The Crested Serpent Eagle is another species bound to suffer from a naming error in perpetuity.

The waterfowl flock was made up of two very unique looking species: the Fulvous and Black-belled Whistling Ducks. Encompassing over 30,000 acres, the refuge protects birds of course, but also butterflies, mammals, and more. After noting as many species as possible, I high-tailed it back to the car.

I had never seen this species of kite before, but Guhin explained that they often hunted in the natural acres of the reserve. The ES NERR is a world-renowned biodiversity hotspot, drawing birders from around the country and around the globe, all happy to see as many of the over 200 species recorded here as possible. The Common Pochard is listed as Vulnerable – not because it is particularly rare, but because of the rapid decline in its numbers (a decline of 50% within 10 years means a species is listed as Vulnerable – and a 50% loss in 10 years sounds quite dramatic and frightening indeed). A New York City Parks Department contractor just wiped out a breeding population of sparrows in tons of trouble already, on land owned by the parks department that was supposed to be protected as “Forever Wild.” Any destruction like this of a wetland would be bad, of course. The country of Mexico as a whole, is host to 27 different species of doves, with the California Baja Sure home to six. There is of course the dry, cactus strewn desert areas, but with mountains up to 7000 feet, the habitat for our local birds is quite varied. The Baja, as it is known, is a truly diverse area.

The resort falls within a site protected by the Habitats Directive and in the vicinity of a Special Area of Conservation for wild birds (Costa Sudoeste sites).
