The Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History boasts an entire collection of skins of birds native to the DC area, from large Bald Eagles to tiny Eastern Screech Owls. Before heading back out into the rain, before making my way to the airport, and then flying home to Florida, I stopped in front of a stained glass window in the museum.

The visitors along the boardwalk at Wakodahatchee Wetlands, Florida were taking photos nonstop, we only had a few minutes before the wetlands closed, oohing and aaahing. I thought about those plumes and about how fortunate we were to be seeing this egret in all its glory.

Rambur’s Forktail (a damselfly I also just saw in southern Florida), can do it for almost 7 hours, while Eastern Forktail needs only 40 minutes. Juniper Titmouse used to be considered conspecific with Oak Titmouse , and they were collectively called Plain Titmouse , an incredibly accurate moniker. It seemed to me like Western Scrub-Jays are as good as keeping a sentinel bird up as Florida Scrub-Jays. Plain as it was, I was still pleased to see one because it was a lifer!
