Known at the time as ‘ terms of venery’ , we know them today as collective nouns. Most of the collective nouns would have been used to describe animals that were hunted for sport which is disturbing when one considers a Parliament of Owls for example, a Herd of Wrens or a Stand of Flamingos.

That is why I spent nearly 2 hours in the company of an Allen’s Hummingbird and an Anna’s Hummingbird , which were enjoying an invigorating dip in the spray of a sprinkler. Pools of water collected on leaves and the bird smeared itself against them.
