According to Macauley Library’s migration map the overwhelming breeding activity for this species occurs north of the state of California. I think their breeding range may be moving South. And a video of him taking a shower in the rain. Of course the males come first to establish territory.

The yellow lores worked for a Little Egret in breeding plumage but I couldn’t figure out why, it was a Little Egret , it wouldn’t be an all white bird. I spent a long time watching this bird, getting images, and getting video. Sorry everyone… Sorry for the shaky video with lots of wind noise.

First of all, the species only occurs semi regularly in North America in a small patch of Alaska where it occasionally breeds. Most of its range is actually in the Old World so if you want to see one in North America you have to arrange a trip to western Alaska in breeding season, not exactly an easy proposition logistically.

Most of the Osprey breeding in North America are migratory, only Florida, the Caribbean and Baja California host non-migratory breeders 1. In migratory populations males usually arrive to breeding grounds a few days before the females and look for nest sites. This pair copulated several times while I was observing.

Eagle Lake, Lake Almanor and Clear Lake have all been identified as Audubon California Important Bird Areas (IBA), meaning that they provide essential habitat for breeding, wintering, and migrating birds. The male is the only Black-necked Stilt in the second segment of this video, along with several Greater White-fronted Geese, and the third bird that comes into view in the final segment that is larger than the other two birds. The male of the species has the upper portion of the head, back of neck, back and wings all glossy black.
