While these birds are very much liked by Chinese birders, the species could unfortunately not be named the National Bird of China as the Latin species name of the bird is Grus Japonicus. It is not quite clear why they do this as it apparently does not affect breeding success. If everybody did this, the result would be chaos.

The main reason seems to be a better sharing of the workload in the more equal same-sex couples – something that is hardly irrelevant for humans. A juvenile, if I am correct – and a rather rare bird in Shanghai, this being rather at the southern end of the wintering breeding range. Not sure about his/her sexual orientation.

This should not be a problem in Shanghai as the pitta has not been reported to breed here.

The ongoing destruction of Nanhui, where the species can frequently be seen on migration, certainly will not help. Judging from the facial expression of this White-shouldered Starling , I would rather not have an annoyed bird of this species as a roommate. The species has reversed sex roles, with the males doing the incubating.
