On a second visit I spotted a fishing boat going east along the channel followed by over a hundred gulls and terns, including over 40 Black Terns. I love American Avocets and I rarely see them in such marvelous breeding plumage, so I was in heaven. They did flush eventually, but not because of humans. American Avocets.

A more surefire way to witness this long-winged bird is by visiting breeding grounds on the Galapago Islands. Two are pelagic species, two are resident, and the other one is a mystery. Not sure why they spend time in Shanghai in winter when they could come here though, but then again, I usually do not understand most of the behavior of humans either. Apparently, when breeding, the two parents divide incubation duties, with one bird taking over the daytime duties and another one the nighttime.

Its amazing to me that there are still places on earth where wildlife is blissfully unafraid of humans. It was made a National Park in the 1980s and is a major breeding and nesting area for over 30,000 seabirds. A male Magnificent Frigatebird in full breeding regalia. This young bird was quite curious and not at all concerned about the presence of humans in the area. There are ample fish in the Fitzroy River for the Black-necked Storks and it is an ideal location for a young bird. The juvenile Black-necked Stork was already the same height as an adult bird, which is approximately 130cm/51 inches.

Their populations have grown about 5% every year since 1966 , and their global breeding population is now larger than 120,000 birds. Still, they are sensitive to human disturbance.
