A few more Pied Oystercatchers start to breed

A couple of weeks ago I introduced you to the pair of Pied Oystercatchers that were the first to start breeding along our coast this year. Since then we have had the two pairs of Pied Oystercatchers that breed between the Surf Club and Gantheaume Point lay their first clutch of eggs. Pied Oystercatcher nest.

Meanwhile, the other pairs of Pied Oystercatchers along Cable Beach have begun to breed as well. There have been some success stories over the years and last year there was one such event. Magpie Geese stood on gates to get away from the flooded landscape We are always conscious of the fact that every flood event in the north of Australia brings cane toads closer to Broome. We know there will be a dramatic reduction in the population of our native wildlife when that happens.

Masked Lapwings breeding at Derby airport

Over the past few months there have been a lot of birds breeding around Broome with the excellent rain events that we have been having and the vegetation is at long last revived. Masked Lapwings have been busy breeding for some months now and some may well be on their second clutch of eggs.

A Gentlemen’s Big Day’s Birding

This wasn’t a mere 24-hour bird race, but a 48-hour event, and was filmed by the BBC for a programme called The Great Safari Bird Race. This fen has breeding Marsh Harriers, and we saw at least three different birds, while Cuckoos called close by. Though I say it myself, it still makes an amusing read.

Australian Painted Snipe breeding near Broome once again

After an incredibly wet start to 2018 as a result of several tropical cyclones and other rain events the land remains saturated around Broome and as a result of this there are several bird species breeding that we don’t even encounter in dry years. Our first ever encounter was just over seven years ago near Broome.

But marrying a widow and thus getting access to scientific information was not the only remarkable event in his life. The eagles do not breed on Hokkaido, spending only a few winter months there – so if you want to see courtship displays as described in here , you have to go further North a bit later in the year.
