Tawny Frogmouths breeding again

I walked slowly around the tree and then left them to have a quiet day in the park before they go hunting at night. We first noticed the odd eye in April this year, but it does not appear to bother it and it can still feed and obviously breed too. Adult and young Tawny Frogmouths. Tawny Frogmouth with an odd right eye.

A study on the breeding biology of Whitehead’s Broadbill was just published in May 2023 but leaves a bit of a puzzle as the breeding success is described as relatively high, meaning there should be other reasons for the population decline of the species. Of course, only chemists have a rough idea what that might mean.

Munkajarra Wetlands near Derby

This will change over time of course and once it rains again you would need to consider if you had the right vehicle to access the area. It is of course a very popular place for waterbirds to drop by and sometimes there are large numbers of Purple Swamphens and Eurasian Coot present. Purple Swamphens. Black-necked Stork.

Broome’s Poinciana trees

The nest in the header photo in a Poinciana tree belongs to a Little Friarbird and they have been breeding recently and there are many juvenile birds about. The Magpie-larks have also been breeding recently and also using the Poinciana trees for nesting. They also offer an excellent opportunity for birds to nest.

Hornbills of Sabah

Another item they feed on is hunting edible bird nest swiftlets, which are quite common in edible swiftlet houses in Sabah, Malaysia ( source ). The first attempt in hunting was made by the male hornbill which was seen snapping at a passing swiftlet, but was unsuccessful.
