This week’s guest blog was written by Linda Hufford, who has been a wildlife rehabilitator specializing in raptors for over twenty years. The newest find of this extremely scarce bird was a male, and was “collected” (an innocent-sounding euphemism for “killed”) for the American Museum of Natural History. His answer surprised me.

Photo by [Clairity]([link] I have no new information or insights to offer you here; as far as I know this issue has been addressed in a number of places including this very interesting if not very current blog post by John Trapp. Hardly any Sandhill Cranes are killed by domestic (including ferrel domestic) cats. We also were amazed by the sheer volume of road kill we saw, something that Anthony detailed in his blog post , which I highly recommend you read, about the day. Well, it was beautiful to humans in those conditions but apparently not for a kingbird, which took advantage of the break in the cool and rainy conditions to skedaddle.

This species prefers wetlands and its numbers have been decimated due to a combination of habitat destruction caused by human population growth and illegal removal of birds and eggs from the wild for the pet and zoo trade. This plain used to be little affected by humans, being grazed by just a few cattle, goats and camels.
