Birding in a Refinery

Perhaps a little more shock-inducing and paradoxical than concepts of birding at sewage ponds or graveyards, an oil refinery seems to be the antithesis of a desirable place for a birder. From Yellow-hooded Blackbirds to Purple and Common Gallinules , there are almost too many birds to focus on!

Birding Tengchong, Yunnan (again)

According to his Wikipedia entry, he was a strong but unsuccessful supporter of women attending the university, so he is one of the better people to name a bird species after. As I saw both of them at the same spot in Tengchong, I wonder whether the bird below is a result of a pairing of the two morphs. A bad one, admittedly.

After a well-deserved rest following a very profitable morning’s birding in the nearby Moco-moco village , we took the short walk from our lodge down to the dock. The second bird followed suit, physics itself noisily straining to keep the bird airborne as it wheeled overhead.

Best Bird of the Weekend (Third of July 2021)

The best of summer birding in my experience takes place at the beach. I found myself fully immersed in marine species while boating, fishing, and birding coastal Virginia with family this weekend. The best of a bunch of birds I see all too rarely was, quite fittingly, Virginia Rail showing well in a saltmarsh.

Birding Jonuta Road, in Tabasco, Mexico

As such, it offers some unique birding experiences. Even better, I happen to have an online birding buddy who offered to make space that Wednesday and Friday to take me to see some of Tabasco’s birds. The similar Pinnated Bittern , however, was a bird that Rolando had doubted he could show me. Good choice!
