Pacific Black Ducks

10,000 Birds

Here in Broome we observe a good selection of ducks and the most prolific at the Broome Poo Ponds is usually the Plumed Whistling-Duck. One of our favourite ducks is the Pink-eared Duck. Pacific Black Ducks lay up to 16 eggs and sometimes two clutches are raised in a year.

Birding in a Refinery

10,000 Birds

Perhaps a little more shock-inducing and paradoxical than concepts of birding at sewage ponds or graveyards, an oil refinery seems to be the antithesis of a desirable place for a birder. From Yellow-hooded Blackbirds to Purple and Common Gallinules , there are almost too many birds to focus on!

10,000 Birds

As grumpy as these daily 30-degree temperature swings are making me, you have to wonder how the birds are reacting. My family’s walk through Rochester’s historic Mt. Corey had a pretty amazing weekend, birding-wise, with a host of highlights including Sora , Hudsonian Godwit , Wilson’s Storm-Petrel , and more.

Great July Birding in Queens

10,000 Birds

Not only that, but the birding is typically not great either. But this July has been magnificent for birds in Queens. Small numbers of common shorebirds were pleasant, a Gull-billed Tern was appreciated, a variety of waterfowl was worth looking through, but I hadn’t seen a single year bird. What a bird for Queens!

Sunset birding from the highway

10,000 Birds

The floodwaters continue to recede across the plains near Broome and the bird-life continues to enjoy the environment. Being out on the highway as the sun goes down offers more relaxed birds nipping back and forth across the highway. The last of the daylight appears to trigger some bird species to make a move to a new location.
