My family took our annual post-Easter Egg hunt hike at Powder Mills Park, where I spied several gorgeous matched pairs of Wood Ducks along with lots of different woodpecker species.

Birds are singing and migrating, freshets are running, and trees are budding – yes, it’s time for all those things. And given what these birds have been through, this caution is certainly warranted. The same can’t really be said of a confusing Orange Bishop or gaudy Mandarin Duck loose in a city park.

I’ve never been one to be overly concerned about whether a bird “counts” People, and organisations, have complex and elaborate rules about whether a bird you saw or heard actually is a bird you saw or heard, which seems a very unnecessary way to add complexity to an already complex hobby.

The danger of reviewing a field guide to the birds of an exotic country you’ve never been to is that you become obsessed with visiting that country, no matter how far away and how expensive it may be. I’m already looking up birding tours of Borneo and pricing airfares. Borneo, the authors say, is under-birded.

During the winter the birds are dependent on small fissures in the sea ice kept open by the currents of the bay. As a result the sea ice has become more unstable, endangering the Inuit who hunt and work on the bay and the ducks who can no longer rely on their instincts to find open water.

Just a quick post today to appreciate one of New Zealand’s most attractive birds, the Paradise Shelduck. They are the only endemic duck species that hunting is permitted for, in fact, the other species being either too rare or outright extinct. Both, howveer, are attractive birds. The female.

The Little Egret walks in front of her, a dozen Lesser Whistling Ducks flies noisily low above water and through a flooded grass wades one Black-winged Stilt. The Osprey tries another hunt, finally a successful one, while Telia goes deeper into the water and lies down. The Sun is getting lower, painting both grass and the tigress gold.

The bird is easy to identify – if it is small, cute, and black, white, and brown, you have found it (though admittedly, a more qualified description can be found at Shanghaibirding ). On my recent short family vacation to Miami, I was granted a single day to get out and really bird like a madman. The reason the location is remaining undisclosed is that reliable Mangrove Cuckoos are difficult to find in the American Birding Association area and are a very sought after species. In the birding community, standardization of common names has followed, and is an on-going project (with mixed success.) In some cases, this has increased beauty and precision, saving us from a morass in which every red bird is a Redbird and every blue jay is a Blue Jay. Peregrine Falcon is certainly more elegant than Duck Hawk.

When you are able to find a lagoon that is land-locked and offers great birding and you are able to walk around the edge it is a delight. The trees are now incredibly tall and are currently flowering offering some great birds. It would still offer excellent birding opportunities from the picnic area. Tree planting is good!

There is a water trough for the dairy cows, but sometimes the Pacific Black Ducks take advantage of the trough! Pacific Black Ducks. The recorded bird was a Nordmann’s Greenshank. Nordmann’s Greenshank photographed hunting on the Cairns Esplanade [Ken Cross]. The bird had been found standing calmly on the muddy esplanade of the northern city of Cairns by Adrian Walsh who, just as calmly, sounded the alarm. The bird sadly was very much deceased.
