There are changes in where to find the birds. The 11th chapter is on research and conservation challenges. I wish I had read this book.

GISS—general impression, size, shape—is intuitive, the result of an unconscious cognitive process derived from experience in the field. Up to 100 kg – possibly a female, my guide and a bear researcher from the wildlife charity Callisto, Yannis Tsanakis, tells me. According to the latest research data, the total Brown Bear population in Greece is 475 to 500 and here in the Pindos range there are 350 to 400 animals (Pilidis, 2015, in pub.).

When inundated, in spring, it is exciting to paddle through the trees, yet birds that often forage on the ground will be pushed away. The Eurasian Wryneck is the woodpecker that doesn’t look like a woodpecker, the bird with the portmanteau name that is also a medical condition (and which may remind some people of a Nora Ephron essay). They are slim and small-headed birds and their bills are fine, not strong and dynamic. This is a very easy book to read.

Smith is the Staff Scientist Emeritus with the Smithsonian’s Tropical Research Centre in Panama. The work was widely cited, followed up with an article in Scientific American and the research appeared (and I may be wrong still appears) in textbooks. For birders, the Wolongshan area is like a poorer cousin of Balangshan – due to the lower elevation, the bird species here are more common and thus less interesting. I can confirm that the Indian Blue Robin – as stated by the HBW – tends to sing from deep cover – not ideal behavior for a bird photographer.
