Poinciana trees are not native to Australia, but they grow very well in the north and are often found in local parks. Magpie-larks collect “mud” from our garden where the water we provide for the birds overflows. As the Poinciana trees lost their leaves we suddenly “lost” our family of Tawny Frogmouths.

We had last experienced this cheerful family of birds in Katherine in the Northern Territory over 13 years ago, so although the population is isolated there they had the same characteristics. They roam in family groups varying from eight birds upwards and have a certain confidence about themselves as they strut around the bush.

I finally managed to get some photos as I found a pair of fantails in the Marlborough sounds that were very interested in me as a source of bugs (they will often follow trampers in the forest to collect flying insects) and being out in the open there was a limited supply of perches and plenty of good light. Over the next few days we expect the Pied Oystercatcher family to make the trek two kilometres down the beach to Gantheaume Point. There is plenty of vegetation for the chick to hide in. A family of Purple Swamphens crossed in front of a slow moving vehicle and they are not a common species to see in the area, though do reside at another ephemeral lake to the north of Broome. I introduced you to this Pied Oystercatcher family four weeks ago. Two weeks ago the Pied Oystercatcher family had moved north to an area with closer proximity to the reef and more bivalves in the inter-tidal zone. When the tide is out and the area where the small bivalves are is exposed the family move forward to feed together.

Lake Corella was formed in 1959 when the Clem Walton Dam was built to collect water for the mining town of Mary Kathleen and is now a popular camping area, especially in the height of tourist season in the cooler months. There was little movement by the family during the heat of the day except to fly to the shoreline for a drink and to cool their feet. As the tide dropped the birds started to take it in turns to collect food from a nearby reef and it took about 8 minutes for each trip. I jumped and the adults let out an alarm call and one went flat.
