Crested Pigeons – Ocyphaps lophotes are very widespread throughout Australia and can easily be observed in Broome on the streetlights on a wintery morning. The Crested Pigeon family remained in the tree away from danger for quite some time with both parents present.

Having found my large Pied Oystercatcher family last week I have spent a lot of time with them this week. The Pied Oystercatcher family, which almost looks like a small flock, have remained in the same place at high tide all week. Once the tide dropped they moved forward as a family and wandered along the exposed sand looking for food.

This year we have had high numbers of Magpie Geese once again in the Broome area and this last weekend we observed our first family groups for the season. We continue to bird-watch from the bitumen and rain continues to fall across the north of Australia.

They are widespread throughout Australia , but it does not mean you necessarily easily observe them. There was an island in the middle of the river and the tall trees held Yellow-billed Spoonbill nests and there were several families within the vicinity. Yellow-billed Spoonbill family. In another year when time stands still when you are not allowed to move freely around Australia or overseas some things happen like clockwork. The eggs hatched out around 20th June after 28 days of incubation and the Pied Oystercatcher family were soon on the move. Adult Pied Oystercatcher and two chicks’ footprints in the sand.

Apparently, the Rufous Whistler used to be known as the Rufous-breasted Thickhead due to its “noticeable breadth of cranium” The source website itself quotes its own source, the delightfully titled “The Useful Birds of Southern Australia”, R Hall, 1907. This is the most common swallow in Australia. .

Pied Oystercatcher eggs It is Winter here in Northern Australia which means plenty of cloud-free blue sky and there are definitely worst places to be sitting for twenty eight days watching the world go by! Last year I introduced you to a Tawny Frogmouth family north of Broome and the nest that they built followed by the family that they raised. The Tawny Frogmouth family is actually in a tree between two rows of cars and appear oblivious to all the comings and goings, though they are nocturnal birds and very well camouflaged.

Platypus prefer a water habitat and their location in Australia means we have rarely travelled to where they live. There is a variation in the plumage of Australian Magpies across Australia and as such they looked different in Victoria. Whenever I walked from Foster to Fish Creek or Foster to Toora I encountered several family groups of Australian Magpies. Late last year I mentioned the presence of Australian Magpies around Broome.

It is now summer here in Australia and there is hope of rain in the next few weeks here in Broome. Earlier this year we encountered a Pheasant Coucal family close to Broome. It has been more than eight months now since we had rain and the land is desperate for rainfall.

It is the longest uninterrupted beach in Western Australia and is 220 kilometres long. Here are some of the photos I took of the families of Pied Oystercatchers. Eighty Mile Beach is located between Broome and Port Hedland and is a remote coastline. The bill also has a dark tip. Juvenile Pied Oystercatcher being independent.

Poinciana trees are not native to Australia, but they grow very well in the north and are often found in local parks. As the Poinciana trees lost their leaves we suddenly “lost” our family of Tawny Frogmouths. We were very pleased to find the Tawny Frogmouth family had not relocated too far! Last year when we camped at Langi Crossing the family of Varied Sittellas that are usually in the area had birds amongst them that were clearly juvenile. They are only 10-11cm long, so one of the smallest birds in Australia and if you are suffering from presbycusis you will be relying on your eyesight for any little bit of movement.

Apostlebirds- Struthidea cinerea have an isolated population in the Northern Territory which is quite separate from the population that runs down the east coast of Australia and can readily be seen in the town of Katherine and further afield. Grey Jumper, Happy Family, Lousy Jack and Twelve Apostles are names that can refer to them.

I observed the whole Pied Oystercatcher family at the water’s edge and the chicks were exposed and vulnerable. This male bird is actually one of the oldest Pied Oystercatchers in Australia at the moment. The eggs hatched out this week and the tides are very big, so there is a huge expanse of sand when the tide goes out.

The header photo above shows where the family rested shortly after the two chicks left the nest on Tuesday. The following day we returned to see if the family of Pied Oystercatchers had moved away from the nest site yet. The family had not moved far and the footprints were clearly visible in the soft sand.

The Emu Dromaius novaehollandiae is Australia’s largest bird standing at up to 2 metres (6 foot 6 inches) tall. There had been good rains the previous year and as a result of that there were numerous family groups. Emu family on the other side of the fence. By Friday morning the family of Pied Oystercatchers had moved a little to the south to an area with more vegetation, but equally far from the ocean. Pied Oystercatcher family. Shading two eggs.
