15 Australian Birds (Episode 1)

It has been more than 5 years since I last went to Australia, and I was even less of a qualified bird photographer then than I am now. However, the lockdown forces me to go deeper and deeper into my photo collection, if I want to write anything at all. And that seems to be the only vaguely satisfying thing left to do at the moment.

Broome’s Poinciana trees

Poinciana trees are not native to Australia, but they grow very well in the north and are often found in local parks. Magpie-larks collect “mud” from our garden where the water we provide for the birds overflows. There are several Poinciana trees in Cygnet Park in Broome and the nearby roundabouts and street verges.

Magpie-lark breeding near Broome

Magpie-larks are a very common bird throughout most of Australia and they are quite at home among the large cities as well as in the country towns and the remote parts of Australia. Magpie-larks have been busy at all of the muddy puddles in recent months collecting mud to make their nests.

Australian Botanic Garden, Mount Annan

The park is the largest botanic garden in Australia and access is free. It was interesting to see how few blue items it had been able to collect in that environment. We are used to seeing the bower of the Great Bowerbird and the huge display of collected items and this was somewhat lacking! Satin Bowerbird -female.
