The gamekeeper drives by, I wave my greetings but do not mention the jackals I am observing at the moment: this animal is not protected in Serbia and is allowed for killing year-round (one may say “hunting” instead, but I am having problems trying to spot the difference). The deer walked down the road, seemingly unconcerned with being so close to an open car window that revealed an excitedly babbling family and a clicking camera. Not that the species status of the Black-tailed Deer we saw really mattered because it was a really cool animal. We saw Black-tailed Deer walking through parking lots.

That bald head, so odd and homely, is actually an adaptation for sticking one’s head deep inside the gut of a deceased mammal. Old World Vultures are nestled within the family Acciptridae along with the hawks and eagles. They primarily prey on the large mammals of the African plains, grasslands stretching from horizon to horizon.

It was pretty awesome to see so many tuskers, as well as families of elephants safe in their special park. This can also be a curse, as I have spent many nights wandering around seeing precisely nothing. Or nothing big at least. So many insects.
