Birding Jianfengling, Hainan (A-H)

10,000 Birds

Still, it has quite a good habitat and birds – so good, in fact, that the frugal blog post writer (me) decided to write two separate posts about this park. This is part one, covering birds named from A to H. Given the exciting and exotic birds Hainan has to offer, starting the post with a Barn Swallow is a bit of a letdown.

Birding Chongming Island in summer

10,000 Birds

Not professionally – these people come in SUVs and probably never recapture their gas money from the fish they catch (though come to think of it, neither do I with my bird photos). This is ok as birds do not have teeth anyway). One strange thing about Chongming is the inevitable presence of people fishing. End of side note.

Birding Shanghai in May 2022

10,000 Birds

So, the next blog post on Shanghai birds may turn out to be a lot more interesting, though of course with regard to bird migration, May is more interesting than June … As I am unlikely to see a live gannet any time soon, I might as well point you to the song “Nigel the gannet” by The Burning Hell now.

You Gotta Fight When You Think it’s the Right Thing to Do

10,000 Birds

I bird, therefore I am. Birding defines me, that much is clear. Yet, for the last month and a half I don’t remember doing any birding (my longest pause in the several years, for sure). But what happened to birding? Basically, I managed to cut myself off my favourite birding area. Yet, the site is quite ruined.

Streaks, Variegations, and Pirates

10,000 Birds

The birds I’m referring to in this post are all flycatchers that occupy woody, forest habitat; but they are very infrequently in the same place at the same time. While the bird above recalls a Great Kiskadee in size and structure, both Variegated and Piratic Flycatchers are considerably smaller and slimmer.

Perch Wars

10,000 Birds

In April of this year, I had the crazy idea of submitting this article to 10,000 Birds for their consideration. In spite of being cosmopolitan birds, found on seven of the nine continents, Black-crowned Night Herons are pretty special birds. But every once in a while, the birds actually do something that tells a story.

“The Hawk’s Way” — a book review

10,000 Birds

Maybe author Sy Montgomery is right when she says that “birdwatchers often look down on falconry,” and maybe not. In The Hawk’s Way, Montgomery is very good on the ethical dilemmas inherent in falconry, centered on both the bird and the woman, even if she never resolves any of them definitively. Could I do this?”
