The Aldea Birding Group that spearheaded this project placed 70 nest boxes in our open spaces and pulled in volunteers to monitor them during the bird’s mating season. One other pair of Pied Oystercatchers also laid eggs two weeks ago and the male bird was marked by the Australasian Wader Study Group in 2005 as an adult bird and the flag reading “A1” is easily read, so we can identify this individual throughout the year. Pied Oystercatcher nest.

Once again the bird disappeared, or at least wasn’t reported, until it was noted at Titchwell RSPB Reserve on the North Norfolk coast on 10 July 2018. A quick search on the Internet revealed that it had been tagged at Benington in North Hertfordshire in August 2018. Sadly, it wasn’t, as the bird was still flying strongly.

There was one odd reprint in 2018, when the Subalpine Warbler was split into the Eastern and Western species, but the changes in the guide weren’t sufficient to call it a 3rd edition, so it remained the updated reprint of the 2nd edition. I am still annoyed that no birds are where they used to be.

Following on from our very wet start to 2018 it was no great surprise that we should encounter a Pied Heron around Broome on our return from our trip to more southern areas of Western Australia. There are some groups of dense trees where Nankeen Night-Herons are known to roost, so they probably joined them after dusk. Pied Herons.

In Europe, shorebirds, gulls an warblers are the three hardest groups to present, describe and ID, so I tested the BOC armour where I know it will be the weakest. On January 31st 2018, skygazers were treated to a rare spectacle. A group of 5 birds approached. The super, blue, blood moon came about when a number of circumstances coincided. These birds were roosting as the supermoon set in the early morning and it coincided with a high tide which kept them on the roost through the morning.
