Grey-crowned Babblers are usually in family groups of eight and are easily heard as you travel along the track. The native plants are often in groups due to the fact that they are mostly self-seeding and once you find a group of these trees or shrubs it is worth stopping to see what is feeding off the nectar.

If there was nothing more than the large group of Brown Teal here, it would be enough to keep me around for a while. For most of the family, the boat was about seeing the incredible islands, and doing some fishing. So, as of 4-10-2018, New Zealand Time, the Little Big Year count is 292, with 98 New Zealand birds, and 88 new lifers!

Arctic Tern : There were multiple records of this species in June of 2018 out at Breezy Point and they just weren’t around when I was out there. There was one at Breezy Point in the summer of 2018 and another one showed up at Jamaica Bay last summer. They must come through as they nest out on Long Island and at many points north.

It seems his family of 5, had rented a condo that sleeps 8, at Atlantis Resort, on Paradise Island, in the Bahamas. While this trip was primarily scheduled as a family rest/rest/vacation outing, with 13 days left in my Little Big Year, that plan is mostly out of the question. If we could get there, all other expenses were covered.

But, the numbers are quite large, and the birds organized in groupings that, for the most part, make it an easy process to figure out which Antwren (or Woodcreeper or Seedeater) is which. And, it has to be added that all of these artists and the additional seven artists contributed images that filled out plates of most of the bird families.

The proprietor of our ecolodge guides my small group of birders up a steep slope where we see, just at the point where a scope view deteriorates into pixels, a huge bird—a Chaco Eagle, also known as a Crowned Eagle—on a huge nest. September 2017, Cerrado, Brazil. We are cautioned to keep the location of the eagle a secret.

I suppose this works with such a small family, but it made my librarian brain ache just a little bit. He notes in the Acknowledgements that photographs were obtained by the publishers initially, and then by requests to gull-oriented Facebook groups. Browsing through this book is tough.
