The source of this ranking, BirdLife International, lists Bolivia as currently having 1,439 bird species, including 18 breeding endemics. But, the numbers are quite large, and the birds organized in groupings that, for the most part, make it an easy process to figure out which Antwren (or Woodcreeper or Seedeater) is which.

The Kerkini Lake National Park is my favourite birding area in the whole of the Balkans and while I’ve been here in April and again (migration), September (migration), October (coffee break), December and January (wintering), this was my first time in the breeding season, in May. Fortunately, the very abundant 2018 rains raised the water level to heights I had never seen, and so far, that seems to be making up for this year’s poor rains. Oddly, I saw no Snowy Plovers, even though these apparently breed by the lakeshore. The west half of the lake is never more than a few feet deep. All Wigeons.

Well, they live in groups, something I would never survive. For quite a few birders visiting Wuyuan, the main reason is to see the Blue-crowned Laughingthrush. But then, I am not a cooperative breeder either (nor a non-cooperative one, should this term exist).

In the case of the Hawaiian Goose ( Branta sandvicensis ), the public notice was published in the Federal Register on April 2, 2018. In particular, a captive-breeding program (1960-2011) likely saved the species from imminent extinction (2,800 were released) and expanded the range of the species to islands where they had been extirpated.

Splits were once a much more subjective determination, based on differences in appearance, vocalizations, habits, and breeding preferences. Following the IOC taxonomy (Gill and Donsker 2018), Birds of Cyprus deals with 405 species. In Europe, shorebirds, gulls an warblers are the three hardest groups to present, describe and ID, so I tested the BOC armour where I know it will be the weakest. The other groups are easier and, hence, shown well.

The proprietor of our ecolodge guides my small group of birders up a steep slope where we see, just at the point where a scope view deteriorates into pixels, a huge bird—a Chaco Eagle, also known as a Crowned Eagle—on a huge nest. The have a habit of cross breeding with the local Mallards , and so many of the local New Zealanders call the Grayllards.
