An animal rights group claims the dogs were killed inhumanely by an outdoor adventure company and thrown into a mass grave. Local media reports say business slumped after the 2010 Winter Olympics and the dogs were no longer needed. The company could not be reached for comment.

Returning to the Tuscan Preserve within weeks of the installation I observed one owl at the entrance to one of the original burrows… And one at the new installation you can see on the far right of this long distance photo.

A little further, there’s a family group of Savannah Elephants with two two-year olds. Those that crossed the road first are waiting for the rest of the group at the other side. The two dogs walk right next to our rover and disappear in the dark. The first to cross is an old female with a two-year old baby.

In fact, we saw two species of monkey, our only sloths, lots of coatis, and my rarest ever mammal sighting—a Jaguarundi —right on site. Yes, that’s Panama City to the right. Over the winter, the universe lost four whooping cranes to what appears to be recreational shooting: three gunned down together in Georgia on December 30, 2010, and another in Alabama on January 28, 2011. One important reason is the wide discrepancy in mid-winter count survey numbers—in Tennessee those figures were 44,000 counted in 2010 versus only 12,000 counted in 2011. Ohio has tracked two families of their state-endangered breeding sandhill cranes and found them to have wintered over in Tennessee in 2010. Wicked, right?
