This year one pair of Pied Oystercatchers has once again proven to be able to raise young. They are one of the older pairs and they have raised several young over the years, but only ever one has been fledged each year. They are the only pair to consistently lay three eggs and all other pairs along the coast only lay two eggs.

It was interesting to observe the juvenile Pied Oystercatchers , with the pale legs and bill with a dark tip, wander along and work out where the food was. There are plenty of small bivalves on the beaches around Broome and it did not take long for them to find some.

Raising my binoculars, I picked out not only Turkey Vultures , with their red heads and silver flight feathers, but also Black Vultures , with gray heads and just their wing tips sporting silver. Large black forms were soaring above the trees in slow, lazy circles, and even from a distance I knew that they were vultures.

My particular favorite terns were the Sandwich Terns, a bird I rarely see in any numbers and just generally good looking with that natty yellow-tipped bill. Some days Snowy Plovers (but no Piping Plovers) were sighted; while we saw mostly Caspian Terns, some afternoons Royal Terns predominated the numbers.
