Black Kites breeding

The adult Black Kites will no doubt find enough roadkill to raise their young. However, I do hope they choose to scavenge at the rubbish tip rather than on the beach when they reach adulthood! Two young Black Kites in the nest. There are very few other raptors in that area at the moment, so the competition for food is low.

Pied Oystercatchers and Sand Goannas

The heavier wide line is the Sand Goanna and all of the multiple lines are the wing tips of the Pied Oystercatchers dragging their wings through the sand. Last year they were successful at raising one chick, so we just have to hope they are this year too. The rocky outcrop is where the nest was.

We have almost forgotten that Manoj has promised us some creatures of the night, when he raised his hand to point at three Mottled Wood Owls right above us (cover photo), beautiful large Strix owls slightly amused by us. We gave Manoj twice the usual and well-earned tip, promising to recommend him to other birders. Promise fulfilled.
