My camera and binoculars, protected by the light coat I had packed, were wet but fully functional. The Song Sparrows were wet. And the White-crowned Sparrows were very, very wet. It would have been a typical rainy California day for, say, the month of January, with steady drizzle punctuated by more substantial showers.

Costa Rica is well known for national parks and other protected areas than offer access to tropical ecosystems dripping with biodiversity. As is typical of urban birding in Costa Rica, we had small flocks of this species fly over and good looks at the White-crowned Parrot , the other most common parrot in the valley. Blackbirds.

The HBW even mentions the importance of Ruoergai for this species: “Key sites for migrants include the Ruoergai Plateau (China), which is also an important breeding area” Common Mergansers also seem to use these wetlands as breeding area. The raptors of Ruoergai deserve a separate post.

I love sparrows, so seeing a feather-worn Vesper Sparrow this past July filled my heart with joy. We saw sparrows–a total of 14 species–and we saw many other great prairie birds, and we often saw them perched on posts. Baird’s Sparrow was one of those elusive creatures.

Even among the protected areas of Serbia, the Iron Gates National Park (in Serbian: Djerdap) stands out as better preserved.
