Then, there were Eurasian Otters , which I’ve seen twice. On a recent visit I threw my bags in the hotel room and went straight there, and got over 60 species of birds in a few hours and fantastic views of Nilgai , the largest antelope in India. Commoner species include Bar-headed Geese , parakeets, shrikes, mynas and minivets. You should also see Gharial and Mugger Crocodiles there.

A Wood Stork lands in a tree, while one Neotropical River Otter swims across and climbs a floating log. This species qualifies as Critically Endangered because extensive habitat destruction and capture for the cagebird trade are causing extremely rapid and continuing population declines. Last year, in November, I notched up a dozen species of butterflies, an impressive total anywhere in Europe so late in the year. Otters are regularly reported, but I’ve yet to see one here, but I have had a number of encounters with Wild Cats , which are quite common and may even be encountered during the day.

Another surprise was that the Singapore Otters are quite content playing on the grass near the Indoor Stadium near where you can cross the river on the pedestrian bridge.

Walking beside the Pasir Ris Park Connector we watched otters playing in the water. We encountered several bird species there including a Yellow-rumped Flycatcher and a nesting Red-breasted Parakeet. It is also a good location for observing otters, squirrels and monitors. Black-naped Oriole. Oriental Pied Hornbill.

A car also doubles as a good hide – many species will not respond to it (from personal experience, not just birds, but otters too). My colleague is a more aggressive driver and he had to call the local farmer for tractor assistance more than once. They are especially suitable for open terrains and larger birds.

After we’d looked at this plain gray bird long enough, we headed to the nature museum and gawked at Black Bears and River Otters and search unsuccessfully for the Mountain Lion. A silhouetted Golden Eagle in flight appears on all current bottlings by Ardmore, and over the years, the same species has occasionally appeared on various products by Scottish distilleries like Glenfarclas and Mortlach. Spotting 57 species of birds in the couple of hours we put in to seeking out birds was never so ho-hum in my life. One final stop at a popular park in Queens netted us another nesting species that we only found because they can’t fly yet, Great Horned Owlets. So-so looks at a brown swallow. How exciting. I am a birder and I can claim that out of Serbia’s total of 350+ bird species, highly urbanised inner city areas of Belgrade hold almost 100 birds, while the outskirts have more than 200 species. eBird says that, at the time of writing (April 2017), there are some ten hotspots that have crossed the 100 bird species mark.
