Upside-down January

10,000 Birds

Photo Una.World/rs The next patch to visit was the Reva Pond, farther down the Danube, to find the Black Woodpecker , 3 WT Eagles and a Eurasian Otter walking on ice, from one hole to another, diving for a short while and continuing farther. And at the beginning of February, my list is still ridiculously low at 55 species.

The Final Days of the Danube backwaters in Belgrade: Chinese Belt and Road Initiative is coming to Serbia

10,000 Birds

And here in Europe, they are the real deal, an indigenous species and not domesticated animals gone wild. Whenever I come here, I am focused on birds, but I have had some good mammal sighting as well: a roe deer swimming across a pond (only its head and antlers visible), a pair of otters playing in the water, a curious (young?)

Because they aren’t fishes, but – Eurasian Otters! kilometres / 0.7

The Belgrade Amazon Campaign or the House of the Eagle

10,000 Birds

That is hardly a surprise: this area holds 3 to 4 breeding pairs of White-tailed Eagles, which represents the biggest density per square mile anywhere in the country! Then, there were Eurasian Otters , which I’ve seen twice. And how about Black Storks, otters and eagles? And, with it, its otters, eagles and storks.

Kerkini in Winter

10,000 Birds

Last year, in November, I notched up a dozen species of butterflies, an impressive total anywhere in Europe so late in the year. A feature of the autumn is the abundance of Great White Egrets – up to 200 on the lake – but as far as I know they have yet to breed here. Despite appearances, they are remarkably docile.

Rancho Naturalista Lodge, Costa Rica, or in the Land of Coffee and Chocolate

10,000 Birds

A Wood Stork lands in a tree, while one Neotropical River Otter swims across and climbs a floating log. Young birds, at least in captivity, become mature after 5 years and start breeding after 6 or 7 years. Coming to Costa Rica, I needed only a few dozen species to cross my first big threshold: a thousand species.
