Finally, of the at least 20 species of mammals present here, the otter, the jackal, and the wildcat certainly deserve a mention. The best birding season here is the winter when waterbirds come to overwinter in those lagoons, followed by migratory seasons and, to a lesser extent, breeding season.

A Wood Stork lands in a tree, while one Neotropical River Otter swims across and climbs a floating log. Young birds, at least in captivity, become mature after 5 years and start breeding after 6 or 7 years.

If you’ve ever seen a Mink at a distance (a live mink, not a coat) you know that they are cute frolicking fun loving land otters. Some of the lakes they breed on have been stocked with salmon and trout. And, the Mink are capable of wiping out large portions of a breeding colony in a short period.

Sea otters put on a playful dance show for us, and proceeded to laze about on the rocks, which we interpreted as posing for the camera. An auspicious Bald Eagle sighting – positioned high in a pine tree – heralded the beginning of a magical afternoon, where we sailed amidst over a million breeding seabirds. Sunrise over Witless Bay.

Though I will grudgingly admit that a few of the birds we saw were alright, like the Northern Gannets in the bay and the Horned Grebes in breeding plumage. Spotting 57 species of birds in the couple of hours we put in to seeking out birds was never so ho-hum in my life. What the? It can’t be! PRAIRIE WARBLER !!!

We found Black-collared Swallows breeding in cracks among the lower riverside rocks. En route we saw even more dolphins, a Giant Otter (dolphins sometimes associate with Giant Otters, Pteronura brasiliensis , to hunt by gathering and attacking fish at the same time) and a group of half a dozen rare (lifer for our tour-leader!)
