Andean Condors On The News

I just read on the news that about 20 Andean Condors (Vultur gryphus) were poisoned in Chile. Later it was determined these condors suffered from organophosphate poisoning after they were exposed to insecticides used for agriculture. Other birds were seen crash landing. Another sick condor and two dead ones were found nearby.

Chongming Island in winter

Population density is far lower than in most parts of the city, and public transportation is limited – probably bad news for the people living on the island, but good news for the birds. A number of species use Chongming as a wintering spot, not just the Cinereous Vultures I already mentioned in a previous post.

As I result, January gave me my slowest start for Michoacán in four years, as far as my number of species is concerned. I missed some regulars, but they were replaced by surprise species. Unlike this article’s header photo, this second shot shows the mistletoe berries which are this species’ favorite food.

Annex II of the Bern Convention lists 45 of Beljarica’s bird species, with a further 91 species in Annex III. Finally, 24 species in Annex I of the EU Bird Directive were recorded in this area.
