I had never birded this way before, and can confirm that what I had heard is true: Birds are much more tolerant of human presence when those humans are on a boat! We saw lots of the usual Heron, Egret, Cormorant, and Pelican suspects. The 29 species I added to my January list say so as well.)

I could see a few Brown Pelicans in the distance, cruising, then sharply banking into a sudden dive. I found it interesting how the birds favoured a certain location in what we humans may term “featureless”, clearly feeling some measure of safety there. In the east, the horizon began to lighten. Brown Pelicans and Laughing Gulls still appeared as silhouettes in the dim light, flying or resting on old wooden pilings out in the waves. Brown Pelicans perched on wooden pilings. No, we didn’t find any new turtle tracks, but we did record 18 bird species. Looking for turtle tracks (but also birds and shells).

Taking my usual route along Okaloosa Island’s Beasley Park, I noted Laughing Gulls , Brown Pelicans , a Snowy Plover or two, and the usual packs of Sanderlings. Unfortunately, their preferred habitat is also preferred by their human counterparts, lost to development or full of sunbathers and swimmers.

Due to the fact that the water is for human consumption there are no water based activities permitted at the dam and it is purely a nature-based day trip.
