The oldest dog, Max, is 17, while the oldest horse, Prince is 36.

I only ran across this one Clark’s Grebe mixed in with in the groups of Westerns. This year they did not disappoint, as the first morning we sighted 17 birds in two groups. Western Grebes, Clark’s Grebes, Wood Ducks, American White Pelicans, and a few Short-billed Dowitchers made up some of the highlights. The bunny got away.

Of course, if you are an average birder in, say, Illinois or Alberta, you probably haven’t lost too much sleep over this group, in spite of its difficulty. The Buff-bellied Flycatcher’s rich brown color makes it stand out from the rest of the group. help to distinguish it from the otherwise identical Pine Flycatcher.

As I got closer to Geelong there were several groups of Black Swans in the shallows feeding. There are 104 of these artistic bollards and each group has a rabbit painted on it somewhere for children to find! These numbers are clearly very rough estimates and, as was pointed out on the discussion on the Facebook eBird discussion group page, 76 million would be over 60% of the known population of the species of Brown-headed Cowbird.

Paul and I led our group down into the marsh where we quickly encountered many Nelson’s Sparrows, a single Saltmarsh Sparrow, and a great many individuals that we could not identify to either. Now called “New Inlet”, this area makes for easy access to to some of the marsh grass habitat along the sound side of the island.
