Rabbit Meadows is a rescue group out of Seattle. As the name suggests, they rescue rabbits, but they also rescue other small animals like ferrets, and other small rodents. They are undertaking a great project that sounds like it will be beneficial for both the sanctuary rabbits and the people who love them.

Just before Thanksgiving, 2010, a driver spotted a Red-tailed hawk sitting on a dead rabbit in the middle of the road. She wasn’t about to leave her rabbit, and the driver figured something was wrong, so he picked her up. A group of us gathered to release her near the spot where she was found. And to prove it, there’s The Queen.

Dirt hawking is a form of falconry that involves hunting rabbits and other small game with Harris Hawks (other hawk species also qualify). There is no wind and the habitat is perfect for cottontail rabbits and the much larger jackrabbits (actually hares), the preferred quarry of this group of three birds. “HO!!

Predators that rely on lemmings, like the Snowy Owl , took advantage of the bounty and had great breeding success, raising large broods which, after the lemming population crashes, dispersed far and wide. Arctic Hare also were largely ignored by predators and bred, well, like rabbits. Foraging, napping, fighting.

If you cannot find the nest or it’s too destroyed, do not try and raise a chick this young. It’s illegal to raise wild birds (even orphaned ones) without state and federal permits. Try to get it too another family group or contact a wildlife rehabber. Never raise a wild goose or duckling yourself.

Nonetheless, they adjusted their behavior to allow Babyl to remain with the group. Caledonian crows live in small family groups and youngsters learn to fashion and use tools by watching adults. He never chased the rabbits, squirrels, chipmunks, or deer who regularly visited. Sometimes the matriarch would even feed Babyl.
