With 85 species in 6 hours, I’d like to think it was well repaid. Las Mesas is the only place I’ve found for which the Black-chinned Sparrow is a reliable species, but this adorable bird, perhaps my favorite local sparrow, always seemed to position himself with some severe backlighting… until this trip.

On a recent visit I threw my bags in the hotel room and went straight there, and got over 60 species of birds in a few hours and fantastic views of Nilgai , the largest antelope in India. Commoner species include Bar-headed Geese , parakeets, shrikes, mynas and minivets. You should also see Gharial and Mugger Crocodiles there.

The area is one of the most important in Greece for birds, comprising more than 270 species. Finally, of the at least 20 species of mammals present here, the otter, the jackal, and the wildcat certainly deserve a mention. I do not remember such salt-scented air anywhere else in Greece.

These large parrots are popular in the pet trade, and that’s a likely source of the population of this species on Trinidad. About one hundred yards away an Anhinga surfaced with a freshly skewered fish. Ferruginous Pygmy-Owl. Noisy Yellow-crowned Parrots indicated that it was time to stop the car and get out. They are all recognisable from their families in Africa and are simply referred to by prefixing with “Seychelles” With most species being the only representative of their family, it made identification easy.
