There is an information shelter as you enter the park and then an information centre close to Cockatoo Lagoon a short distance in. per person per night and discounts for families. We saw Crimson Finches in other areas of the park, so all up it is a great place to observe any of the finch species. Cockatoo Lagoon.

There wasn’t much around, and aside from a lifer Yellow-bellied Bulbul the two most impressive species were heard not seen – a Blue-headed Pitta an a Banded Kingfisher. The highlight again happened before we left the camp, a family of Crested Firebacks. An oversubscribed night drive didn’t help.

Turdus “Blacky&# Merula sat near the trunk of the small evergreen in the backyard that was his territory’s centre, hunkered down and head tucked in to shelter from the rain. It sheltered him, it haunted him, and it set his thoughts adrift, to the warmth of spring and the family he had. All were long gone.

All of the green coloured round shrubs are commonly called Spinifex, but it is in fact a member of the Triodia family and it is important to be careful of getting any of the leaf tips caught in your skin, because it can easily lead to an infection. I am uncertain of the exact species of dragon that we commonly found on the rim.

The simple answer is monetary gain, there is a global black market for these items, regardless of the species’ vulnerability for extinction. a close childhood friend of Lendrum’s, Howard Waller, breeds falcons for Sheikh Butti bin Maktoum, a member of the Dubai royal family. In the more sheltered areas the heathland is given over to eucalyptus forests. The most common species are two types of honeyeater, the New Holland Honeyeater , a small black white and yellow species, and the larger Little Wattlebird. This noisy species is often heard throughout the park. And a blaze of wildlflowers too.

The National Park is unusual because it offers very few facilities compared to most, but there is a sealed road right into the small car park and a shade shelter with a table and chairs and information about the park. As we wandered along the trail we soon encountered family groups of both White-winged Fairywrens and Variegated Fairywrens.

This outstanding member of the wattlebird family is unique among songbirds in having different shaped beaks for each of the sexes. We’ll also keep our eyes open for several members of the New Zealand wren family. This species, the smallest, is endemic to North Island and should be fairly common in the wet lowland forests.
