At the end of October, my family flew to Florida for a multi-day road trip aimed at the beautiful springs. Water quality was good that day, and we could perfectly see the waving eelgrass, the freshwater fish species, the adorable turtles. How to describe these underwater avian species? Tawny Frogmouths are actually more closely related to the Nightjar family. The dam was very full and there were numerous species of birds present. The main difference was the reduced numbers of individual species and this would be because there was now other water sources after recent rains and the dam was not the only water about.

There wasn’t much around, and aside from a lifer Yellow-bellied Bulbul the two most impressive species were heard not seen – a Blue-headed Pitta an a Banded Kingfisher. The highlight again happened before we left the camp, a family of Crested Firebacks. An oversubscribed night drive didn’t help. A tick is a tick.

What my previous experience had not prepared me for, was that this summer I would see many of those species for the first time all at once. We are in the middle of our monsoon season, and I had to repeatedly find shelter from brief midday showers. Of course, one never limits oneself to a single taxonomic family.
