Once upon a time in Bojcinska Forest

Gazetted as the “nature monument” in 2013, one of the few remaining – Bojcinska Forest by the village of Progar covers 670 ha / 1650 ac, with around 108 bird species and some 60 species of mammals. During WWII, the forest was used as a base of the local Partisan squad (the communist resistance), hiding in subterranean shelters.

Huizaches, Granjenos, and Nopales

Chief among these are three trees, known here as Huizaches (Sweet Acacia, Vachellia farnesiana), Granjenos (Spiny Hackberry, Celtis ehernbergiana), and Nopales (Prickly Pear, various species). But the area would not be home for more than 120 species, if it were not for those thorny trees. Humans like me enjoy eating them, too!

I’m Birding in the Rain, Just Birding in the Rain

And indeed, it did rain just enough to keep us consistently wet, but we were too pendejo to seek shelter. In our defense, toughing it out allowed the four of us to see 83 species in one day, a very respectable total for Paso Ancho. So true, so true. It was a thrill to see this male Painted Bunting so up close.

We had taken a trail down from the main path in Kent Park to a shelter to discover several bird species in the area including the White-crested Laughingthrush.
