The reasoning is that most of the species in these families are birds seen near shore, but not at sea.

They are part of a family of New World Quail which includes Gambel’s, Mountain, Scaled and Montezuma Quail, as well as the Northern Bobwhite. The family stays very close to cover for several weeks, getting bolder as the young develop. The family group pictured below has been visiting my yard recently.

There is the “The Moth,” a storytelling group popularized by The Moth Radio Hour. The group’s name is in honor of the moths attracted to porch lights in evenings gone by, when storytellers would sit and tell tales on these porches. But, there have been exceptions. Moths are more than bird food. Let that sink in.

The guide has been expertly, even lovingly revised, expanded and updated (as the authors’ names indicate, this is largely a family affair). As in the ornithological world, there has been a major shift in groupings and scientific names of mushrooms. These are much simpler, depending on the features on the specific group.

Woodpeckers of the World: A Photographic Guide is the first major guide to family Picidae in 20 years.
