At the end of October, my family flew to Florida for a multi-day road trip aimed at the beautiful springs. Water quality was good that day, and we could perfectly see the waving eelgrass, the freshwater fish species, the adorable turtles. We had an ambitious itinerary planned: six springs within eight Florida State Parks.

The species is fairly widespread in the Western Pacific, ranging from New Zealand to Japan, and contrary to its name it isn’t actually a true snapper (family Lutjanidae), but is instead a member of the porgy and sea bream family (Sparidae). They were also part of the diet of early European settlers.

The seahawk that I refer to is, of course, the Osprey , a magnificent, fish-eating raptor that can be found not only catching and eating fish in Seattle’s extensive waterways but nesting as well. And though seeing the nest was nice it was even more of a treat to have one of the birds do a fly-by nearly right over our heads!

Now we were in Finca Tres Equis, a family cocoa farm (if I understood well, it translates as Triple X Farm) and a private reserve of over 300 hectares, of which more than 70 percent is a forest, representing part of a Jaguar corridor. At least one Boat-billed Heron awaited us in the thickets. A group (maybe 4-5 ex.)

We pulled into the parking lot, got out of the car, and before I’d even had a chance to pull my binoculars out of my backpack, an adult eagle soared right over our heads. Furthermore we have another very special stork-like bird, the regal Shoebill , previously known as the Whale-headed Stork but now placed in its own family. Ethiopia’s Rift Valley lakes such as Lake Ziway and Awassa are famous for the gangs of Marabous that hang around the fish markets and allow close approach in the hope of a smelly handout.

Located about 20 miles from Lakeview, Oregon, and sitting at an elevation of 5100 feet, this 208 acre lake is home to many species of fish, including Largemouth Bass, Crappie and Bluegill. There was a small house at the north end of the lake that kept a bit of fishing gear, rented some small boats and had a few snacks.

Several more hours of driving on icy roads took us to Washi-no-yado, a traditional Japanese B&B near Rausu, the ‘place to be’ for Blakiston’s Fish-Owl.

Lunch, some time to get to know our rooms (I loved mine, right next to a tree that housed a Spotted Owlet), and we were off again for Ranthambhore National Park, right down the road. Well, the Dusky Eagle-Owl was big too, but for some reason, the Fish-Owl seemed huge. Target: Tigers. It was a big owl. And this is what we saw.

We presume they lose their feet to fish, as the red lure must be quite enticing! They love to hang out in town around the Fish and Chip shops for some reason! The gull on the right has nice red legs and bill and is a full adult bird. This covers all species in both the duck and gull family in most households!

So it was with my family’s trip to Borneo, where, for the end our trip, we had a choice of the Semporna Archipelago, home of the world famous dive site of Sipadan, or Mantanani, a small island off Borneo’s north coast which also had beaches and diving. The Gulf is seeing a lot of input from rain swollen rivers right not and I suspect therein lies the answer but whatever the reason may be, take a ferry now and it would be hard not to connect with this species. At other points, they would join groups of Black Terns foraging for bait fish driven to the surface.

I was vacationing on Kennebago Lake, where my family has been coming every summer for nearly twenty years. Not impeded by branches or the need to bushwhack, we could paddle right up close to the sound, in this case the merry singing of a White-throated Sparrow. They were there, but I couldn’t see them. He even matched my kayak!
